8 Cup French Press

How much Coffee to put in my french press?

I recently bought an 8 cups French press cos I wanna stay away from the instant coffee. The first time, I ground 4 tbsp of Coffee Beans and follow the rest of the instruction. It was way too strong for me, so this time, I tested it with 2 tbsp and it turned out too light

But I’m not sure now, cos the first time I did it, I ground the beans til they were fine, and this time, it was a bit more coarse. Should I try 2 tbsp again but ground the coffee finer? There are people out there that says that will be bad for my french press and I shouldn’t do it, and other advice I got was the finer it is, the more bitter and strong it will become.

Finally, how do you wash it? Do you use soap, or rinse it? I’m afraid to put it in the dishwasher.

Press pots are measured in 4oz servings, so an 8-cup = 32oz.

You should use 1Tbsp (or 1 scoop that came with it) coarse-Ground Coffee per 4oz cup (=8Tbsp),
add nearly boiling/just off-the-boil water,
attach lid & steep for 3 minutes,
slowly depress plunger and pour.

Pour all, as anything still in the pot will continue steeping and become bitter. You can use the pot halfway to reduce the amount of coffee and waste.

If the coffee is too strong for your taste (it will always be richer than filtered coffee), don’t use less grounds, just add hot water to your mug to dilute the coffee. This is nothing unusual: doing this with espresso is how you create an Americano.

As to cleaning: you can put it on the top rack of your dishwasher (it won’t hurt it), but I like to hand wash mine since it takes less than 1 minute and I might use mine several times before running the dishwasher.

Because the coffee grounds remain in direct contact with the brewing water and the grinds are filtered from the water via a mesh instead of a paper filter, coffee brewed with the French press captures more of the coffee’s flavor and essential oils, which would become trapped in a traditional drip brew machine’s paper filters. French pressed coffee is usually stronger and thicker and has more sediment than drip-brewed coffee.
