to tell the difference? I am not one who places a great deal of importance on reviews of coffee I have read that talk about coffee as if it were a fine wine. I just like it hot and black, a little on the strong side. How about it? Should I spring for a home coffee grinder?

In a word yes. The best part of coffee flavour is in the essential oils it contains. These evaporate fairly quickly after the bean has been ground so the only way to drink coffee at its best is to grind the beans for each drink you make.
