Cake $15.95 Be it a birthday or a wedding—let them eat cake. Encased in icing, crowned with candles, emblazoned with congratulatory words—cake is the ultimate food of celebration in many cultures around the world. But how did cake come to be the essential food marker of a significant occasion? In Cake: A Global History , Nicola Humble explores the meanings, legends, rituals, and symbolism attached to cake through the ages.             Humble describes the many national differences in cake-making techniques, customs, and regional histories—from the French gâteau Paris-Brest , named for a cycle race and designed to imitate the form of a bicycle wheel, to the American Lady Baltimore cake, likely named for a fictional cake in a 1906 novel by Owen Wister. She also details the role of cake in literature, art, and film—including Miss Havisham’s imperishable wedding cake in Great Expectations and Marcel Proust’s madeleine of memory—as well as the art and architecture of cake making itself. Featuring a large selection of mouthwatering images, as well as many examples and recipes for some particularly unusual cakes, Cake will provide many sweet reasons for celebration. |

Made From Scratch $17.5 An acclaimed journalist’s provocative new work, an affirmation of domesticity and its proud history, explores how the traditions of home and hearth–as our grandmothers knew them–are close to extinction and shows the myriad ways women are reconnecting to these time-honored customs. Made from Scratch tells the story of the unsung heroines of the hearth, exploring the history of female domesticity, charting the cultural changes it has weathered, and visiting with modern-day homemakers. Whether baking a birthday cake from scratch, cherishing heirlooms from the past, cooking a soup, or darning a sock, this book is about the ways home traditions, passed from one generation to the next, preserve our souls–especially in our ever more processed, synthetic world where buy home-made goods and fail to see the irony in that. |

Made from Scratch: $8.72 Discovering the pleasures of a handmade life was a longtime dream for urban homesteader Jenna Woginrich. At 24 years old, living in an apartment in Nashville, Tennessee, and working as a computer designer, Woginrich was nurturing her dream of learning to homestead. Now, at 27, she’s settled on a rented farm in rural Vermont, where she cares for two working sled dogs, chickens, a flock of sheep, honeybees, a couple of geese, fluffy Angora rabbits, and a backyard garden that provides much of her own food. Part memoir and part how-to manual, Made from Scratch recounts Woginrich’s growing independence and the successes and missteps she experiences as she learns to more fully live off the land. By turns upbeat, dramatic, and sometimes sorrowful, her story embodies the experience of the new homesteader — one who is committed to reducing dependence on commercially produced goods while still working a day job to pay the rent. Cake Decorating $68.51 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Cake decorating is one of the sugar arts that uses icing or frosting and other edible decorative elements to make otherwise plain cakes more visually interesting. Alternatively, cakes can be molded and sculpted to resemble threedimensional persons, places and things. In many areas of the world, decorated cakes are often a focal point of a special celebration such as a birthday, graduation, bridal shower, wedding, or anniversary. During the 1840s, the advent of temperaturecontrolled ovens and the production of baking soda and baking powder made baking cakes much easier. Even though baking from scratch decreased during the latter part of the 20th century in the United States decorated cakes have remained an important part of celebrations such as weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, showers and other special occasions. Recently cakes decorated with fondant have become extremely popular and resulted in several reality based TV shows across the country.
