Lafayette $19.95 Acclaim for Lafayette “I found Mr. Unger’s book exceptionally well done. It’s an admirable account of the marquis’s two revolutions-one might even say his two lives-the French and the American. It also captures the private Lafayette and his remarkable wife, Adrienne, in often moving detail.” -Thomas Fleming, author, Liberty!: The American Revolution “Harlow Unger’s Lafayette is a remarkable and dramatic account of a life as fully lived as it is possible to imagine, that of Gilbert de Motier, marquis de Lafayette. To American readers Unger’s biography will provide a stark reminder of just how near run a thing was our War of Independence and the degree to which our forefathers’ victory hinged on the help of our French allies, marshalled for George Washington by his ‘adopted’ son, Lafayette. But even more absorbing and much less well known to the general reader will be Unger’s account of Lafayette’s idealistic but naive efforts to plant the fruits of the American democracy he so admired in the unreceptive soil of his homeland. His inspired oratory produced not the constitutional democracy he sought but the bloody Jacobin excesses of the French Revolution.”-Larry Collins, coauthor, Is Paris Burning? and O Jerusalem! “A lively and entertaining portrait of one of the most important supporting actors in the two revolutions that transformed the modern world.”-Susan Dunn, author, Sister Revolutions: French Lightning, American Light “Harlow Unger has cornered the market on muses to emerge as America’s most readable historian. His new biography of the marquis de Lafayette combines a thoroughgoing account of the age of revolution, a probing psychological study of a complex man, and a literary style that goes down like cream. A worthy successor to his splendid biography of Noah Webster.”-Florence King, Contributing Editor, National Review “Enlightening! The picture of Lafayette’s life is a window to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century history.”-Michel Aubert La Fayette |

La Boheme (Dodo Press) $18.77 Giuseppe Giacosa (18471906) was an Italian poet, playwright and librettist. He gained initial fame for writing the poems in Una Partita a Scacchi (A Game of Chess) in 1871. His main field was playwriting, which he accomplished with both insight and simplicity, using subjects set in Piedmont and themes addressing contemporary bourgeois values. He wrote La Dame de Challant for noted French actress Sarah Bernhardt, which she produced in New York in 1891. He also wrote the librettos used by Giacomo Puccini in La Bohme, Tosca and Madama Butterfly in conjunction with Luigi Illica. Luigi Illica (18571919) was a famous librettist who wrote for Giacomo Puccini (usually with Giuseppe Giacosa), Alfredo Catalani, Umberto Giordano and other important Italian composers. The Fables of La Fontaine (Dodo Press) $39.12 Jean de La Fontaine was the most famous French fabulist and probably the most widely read French poet of the 17th century. According to Flaubert, he was the only French poet to understand and master the texture of the French language before Hugo. The works of La Fontaine, the total bulk of which is considerable, fall no less naturally than traditionally into three divisions, the Fables, the Contes and the miscellaneous works. Of these the first may be said to be known universally, the second to be known to all lovers of French literature, the third to be with a few exceptions practically forgotten. La Fontaines Fables, first published in 1668, are choice in every sense: utterly correct, balanced, exquisite in rhyme, natural and easy, droll, witty, knowing, sage. They were an immediate success and many generations of French students have learned them by heart at school. Author: La Fontaine, Jean de/ Gibbs, J. W. M./ Wright, Elizur Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 476 Publication Date: 2007/05/01 Language: English Dimensions: 9.00 x 6.00 x 1.06 inches |

Lafayette: Hero Of The American Revolution $19.79 In this long-overdue history of Marquis Gilbert de Lafayette, acclaimed French author Gonzague Saint Bris recounts Lafayette’s invaluable contributions to the American War of Independence and, later, the French Revolution of 1789. The first study of Lafayette to appear in almost ten years, Saint Bris’ new volume recounts the young Lafayette’s personal friendship with George Washington, who went so far as to refer to Lafayette as his "adopted son," and his pivotal role as Washington’s aide-de-camp in helping establish the fledgling American nation. Lafayette’s presence at the British surrender at Yorktown is a stark reminder of just how closely our forefather’s victory hinged on the help of our French allies, who were roused into action by Lafayette himself. equally absorbing and less well known is Lafayette’s idealistic but naive efforts to plant the fruits of the American-style democracy he so admired in the unreceptive soil of his homeland. The rousing story of Lafayette-aide-de-camp and "adopted son" of George Washington-exploring his vital role in the American Revolution. |
